Float the bag of fish on your pond briefly. Shade the bag from the sun if it is sunny. Go get your ph test kit. Open the fish bag, rolling the edges back like rolling your sleeves up. Check your pond’s ph and the ph in the bag. If there is a large discrepancy, take a longer time to change out the water in the bag as follows:
• Slowly add pond water to the fish bag to even the temperature between the bag water and the pond water. This will slowly mix the water to adapt the fish to any ph change also. This should take about 10 minutes. A little longer if you have koi who need a little more time to adjust. Use common sense, the larger the fish and the more water in the bag, the longer the process should take. If the bag is full of water with only a small addition of pond water, scoop bagged water out onto the ground, not into your pond.
• To release the fish, wet your hands and remove fish from the bag one at a time. Discard pond water on the ground, not in your pond.
• This is a great time to keep track of your pond’s water quality. Keep your eye on the nitrite and ammonia levels. Do a 1/3 water change if they are high as a result of adding fish.
• KEEP SALT LEVELS AT 1% TO DESTRESS FISH AND STIMULATE THEIR IMMUNE SYSTEMS. Salt also reduces parasites in the pond and does not harm any living being at .01%. Use 1# of salt per 100 gallons of pond water.
